The assessment concluded that NK603 was as safe as non-GM corn, after which the European Union granted approval for its use in food and feed.<BR><BR>Seralini said EFSA&#8217;s assessments were less rigorous than his team&#8217;s study.<BR><BR>&#8220;GMOs have been evaluated in a extremely poor and lax way with much less analysis than we have done. It&#8217;s the world&#8217;s most detailed and longest study. Therefore, some people are responsible and guilty of authorizing this GMO after only three months,&#8221; he said.<BR><BR>(Reporting by Clement Rossignol; Writing by Charlie Dunmore; Editing by Hugh Lawson)</P></p>

(item 3) <BR><BR>&#8220;&#8230;why was it approved a decade ago without the necessary evidence that it was safe to eat? New Zealand has more than 70 GE foods approved for sale in New Zealand to date, and these approvals were mostly based on health studies that were 90 days long or less. This new research recorded effects for two years and the tumours and deaths showed up after that previous 90 day cut off point.&#8221; (item 4)<BR><BR>&#8220;For the first time ever, a GM organism and a herbicide have been evaluated for their long-term impact on health, and more thoroughly than by governments or the industry. Are Canadians expected to continue eating GM corn? The federal government needs to redesign the entire system that approves GM foods because our regulations are not designed to look for the types of problems these scientists have found&#8230; We cannot rely on science from companies to prove safety. We need to turn to the precautionary principle to keep Canadians safe and this means keeping GM foods off the shelves.&#8221; (item 6)<BR><BR>&#8220;We need urgently find out if Roundup residues are coming through into the human diet as a result of GM Roundup Ready maize being fed to livestock, poultry and farmed fish. Monsanto should do the ethical thing and withdraw such GM crops from the market until they are proven to be safe as well as being held fully liable for the health impacts of their products&#8221;. (item 7)<BR><BR>NOTE: Sadly, referring the study to bodies like the European Food Safety Agency is likely to be a complete waste of time given that the EFSA is distinguished by longstanding and &#8220;scandalously close links between its members and the industry, and a lack of independence,&#8221; as Greenpeace notes.<BR><SPAN style="TEXT-DECORATION: underline"><A>http://ogm.greenpeace.fr/nocivite-des-ogm-pour-la-sante-de-nouveaux-resultats-accablants</A></SPAN><BR>&#8212;<BR>&#8212;<BR><STRONG>1.Austria wants EU review of GM corn policy</STRONG><BR>Reuters, September 20 2012<BR><SPAN style="TEXT-DECORATION: underline"><A>http://af.reuters.com/article/commoditiesNews/idAFL5E8KKEFE20120920</A></SPAN><BR><BR>VIENNA &#8211; Austria&#8217;s minister for agriculture and the environment called on the European Commission to review its approval process for genetically modified (GM) food after a controversial French study linked a kind of GM corn to higher health risks in rats.<BR><BR>French scientists said on Wednesday that rats fed on Monsanto&#8217;s GM corn or exposed to its top-selling weedkiller saw a higher incidence of tumours and organ damage and died earlier than those on a standard diet.<BR><BR>The French government asked its health watchdog to investigate the findings, although a number of scientists questioned the study&#8217;s basic methods and Monsanto said it felt confident its products had been proven safe.<BR><BR>Calling the study a justification of consumer concern about GM products, Niki Berlakovich said Austria &#8211; like France a hardliner against GM food &#8211; would thoroughly examine results of the French study when they were available.<BR><BR>&#8220;One thing is clear: Given this study the European Commission has to rethink its verification practices and the approval process must get an in-depth review,&#8221; he said in a statement.<BR><BR>Austria has banned all the genetically modified plants allowed by the EU, Berlakovich noted, adding: &#8220;We want to decide for ourselves in the future as well and keep the ban on plantings to protect out environment and our consumers.&#8221;<BR><BR>Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are deeply unpopular in Europe but dominate major crops in the United States.<BR><BR>Europe&#8217;s food safety agency advisory panel on GMOs has already expressed the opinion that NK603 &#8211; a seed variety made tolerant to dousings of Monsanto&#8217;s Roundup weedkiller and the one used in the French study &#8211; is as safe as conventional maize.<BR><BR>But that opinion was based on 90-day studies, while the latest study tracked rats over two years.</P><br />

[2] Friends of the Earth Europe is calling for an immediate suspension of imports of all GM foods and feeds on which the herbicide Roundup is used.<BR><BR>Mute Schimpf, food campaigner for Friends of the Earth Europe said: &#8220;This research raises new questions about the safety of genetically modified foods. It is now time for the EU to act to protect public health. On the basis of this research, national governments and the European Commission should immediately suspend all similar GM foods and halt all further GMO approvals.&#8221;<BR><BR>The maize tested in the new study, Monsanto’s NK603, has been modified so that it can survive spraying by Monsanto&#8217;s own herbicide Roundup whilst all other plants in the field are destroyed. <P><BR><STRONG>3.French study links GM maize to tumours in rats</STRONG><BR>Farming Online, 19 September 2012<BR><SPAN style="TEXT-DECORATION: underline"><A href="http://www.farming.co.uk/news/article/7202">http://www.farming.co.uk/news/article/7202</A></SPAN><BR><BR>Researchers from the University of Caen, France have found tumours in rats fed a lifetime diet of Monsanto&#8217;s genetically modified maize.<BR><BR>The study, published on Wednesday (19th September) in the peer reviewed journal Food and Chemical Toxicology, revealed rats fed on Monsanto&#8217;s glyphosate-resistant NK603 seeds, or given water contaminated with glyphosate (sold as Roundup by the company) died earlier than a control group and suffered tumours and organ damage. The perturbing findings were unveiled at an event in London on Wednesday.<BR><BR>French researchers have claimed rats fed on GM maize suffered adverse effects<BR><BR>According to Gilles-Eric Seralini, who led the research, rats fed on the GM diet suffered liver and kidney damage and mammary tumours. 50 per cent of male rats and 70 per cent of females on the GM diet died prematurely, compared to 20 and 30 per cent in the control group. Tumours also tended to develop earlier in rats fed on the GM diet.<BR><BR>The researchers who conducted the tests are known to be staunch critics of the GM industry, and have previously conducted research which found similar results in rats. In 2009, research conducted by a number of French institutions, which included work by Seralini, demonstrated that rats fed on varieties of GM maize suffered side effects which researchers put down to the novel organisms in their diet. The varieties tested included including NK 603 and MON 810, the only GM crop currently licensed for cultivation in the EU.<BR><BR>The researchers said then that their investigation “clearly reveals… side- effects linked with GM maize consumption, which were sex- and often dose-dependent. Effects were mostly associated with the kidney and liver; the dietary detoxifying organs.” They concluded that, judging by the effect on rats, “Unintended direct or indirect metabolic consequences of the genetic modification cannot be excluded.”<BR><BR>Whereas that study was conducted over a shorter space of time (three months), the Food and Chemical Toxicology study tracks rats’ progress throughout their 2 year lifespan. The researchers said they feel their latest findings give a more authoritative and substantial evidence base to their concerns than their previous work, which Monsanto dismissed in 2009.<BR><BR>Professor Seralini said on Wednesday, “After less than a year of different GMO maize menus there was carnage among our rats to a degree I had not imagined.”<BR><BR>The French government has ordered national health and safety watchdog ANSES to investigate the findings. Agriculture Minister Stephane Le Foll, Ecology Minister Delphine Batho and Health and Social Affairs Minister Marisol Touraine announced they had commissioned an investigation into the findings on Wednesday. Cultivation of GM crops is currently banned in France, though the European Food Safety Authority had previously deemed NK603 to be &#8220;as safe as conventional maize.&#8221;<BR><BR>Some scientists have been quick to criticise the study, suggesting the type of rat used in the experiments is prone to tumours, particularly mammary tumours, and especially if the rats’ food intake is not restricted. However, sceptics maintain that, as GM crops are such a novel invention and their use is often strictly guarded by patent owners, no information available would clearly demonstrate whether or not the crops are safe.&nbsp;&nbsp; <BR><BR>In response to calls made last week by the UK government’s environmental watchdog to tighten regulation and scrutiny on GM crops, over potential environmental and safety concerns, Defra effectively admitted that money, rather than science would govern its decision making on the matter of GM. A department spokesperson said Defra is concerned with ensuring “choice can be exercised and economic interests appropriately protected” and expressed the intention to “Leave the normal operation of the market to determine whether or not an approved GM product gains acceptance.”<BR><BR>The Environmental Audit Committee, which reviews government policy decisions from an environmental perspective, had called on Westminster to introduce “Additional conditionalities applied to GM crops beyond those which form part of the EU environmental risk assessment and authorisation procedure,” and recommended that “A new independent body should be established to research, evaluate and report on the potential impacts on the environment of GM crops, and their impacts on farming and on the global food system.”</P><br />

Eating this corn has now been proven to cause the growth of tumours, so why was it approved a decade ago without the necessary evidence that it was safe to eat?&#8221; Green Party genetic engineering spokesperson Steffan Browning asked today.<BR><BR>&#8220;New Zealand has more than 70 GE foods approved for sale in New Zealand to date, and these approvals were mostly based on health studies that were 90 days long or less. This new research recorded effects for two years and the tumours and deaths showed up after that previous 90 day cut off point.<BR><BR>&#8220;We now know that eating this corn, called NK603, causes tumours and we can’t be sure that any products containing these GE foods currently out there being eaten by New Zealanders are safe either.<BR><BR>“FSANZ must immediately recall any products that have this strain of GE corn as an ingredient and reassess all previous approvals for long term eating safety.<BR><BR>“New Zealanders don’t want to be part of a science experiment. They rely on the Government to make sure these products are safe before they are released for human consumption.<BR><BR>“Despite legal requirements, most GE foods are unlabelled so New Zealanders can’t even choose to avoid them.<BR><BR>“I am hopeful that this study is on the top of the Minister for Food Safety’s reading list this morning and that she will take immediate action to protect the health of New Zealanders.<BR><BR>“GE foods should not be in our food chain,” said Mr Browning.<BR><BR>Click here to read the article in the Journal of Food and Toxicology: <SPAN style="TEXT-DECORATION: underline"><A href="http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0278691512005637">http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0278691512005637</A></SPAN><BR>&#8212;<BR>&#8212;<BR><STRONG>5.France orders probe after rat study links GM to cancer</STRONG><BR>Agence France-Presse (AFP), 19 September 2012<BR><SPAN style="TEXT-DECORATION: underline"><A href="http://www.expatica.com/fr/news/french-news/france-orders-probe-after-rat-study-links-gm-to-cancer_244487.html">http://www.expatica.com/fr/news/french-news/france-orders-probe-after-rat-study-links-gm-to-cancer_244487.html</A></SPAN><BR><BR>France&#8217;s government on Wednesday asked a health watchdog to carry out a probe, possibly leading to EU suspension of a genetically-modified corn, after a study in rats linked the grain to cancer.<BR><BR>Agriculture Minister Stephane Le Foll, Ecology Minister Delphine Batho and Health and Social Affairs Minister Marisol Touraine said they had asked the National Agency for Health Safety (ANSES) to investigate the finding.<BR><BR>&#8220;Depending on ANSES&#8217; opinion, the government will urge the European authorities to take all necessary measures to protect human and animal health,&#8221; they said in a joint statement.<BR><BR>&#8220;(The measures) could go as far as invoking emergency suspension of imports of NK603 corn to Europe pending a re-examination of this product on the basis of enhanced assessment methods.&#8221;<BR><BR>Earlier, French scientists led by Gilles-Eric Seralini at the University of Caen in Normandy unveiled a study that said rats fed with NK603 corn or exposed to the weedkiller with which it is used developed tumours.<BR><BR>NK603 is a corn, also called maize, made by US agribusiness giant Monsanto.<BR><BR>It has been engineered to make it resistant to Monsanto&#8217;s herbicide Roundup.<BR><BR>This enables farmers to douse fields with the weedkiller in a single go, thus offering substantial savings.<BR><BR>Genetically modified (GM) crops are widely grown in North America, Brazil and China but are a hot-button issue in Europe.<BR><BR>The study, published in the peer-reviewed journal Food and Chemical Toxicology, says it is the first to look at rats over their normal lifespan of two years.<BR><BR>&#8220;For the first time ever, a GM organism and a herbicide have been evaluated for their long-term impact on health, and more thoroughly than by governments or the industry,&#8221; Seralini told AFP. &#8220;The results are alarming.&#8221;<BR><BR>Two hundred male and female rats were split into 10 groups of 10 animals.<BR><BR>One was a &#8220;control&#8221; group which was given ordinary rat food that contained 33 percent non-GM corn, and plain water.<BR><BR>Three groups were given ordinary rat food and water with increasing doses of Roundup, reflecting various concentrations of the herbicide in the food chain.<BR><BR>The other six were fed rat food of which 11, 22 or 33 percent comprised NK603 corn, either treated or not with Roundup when the corn was grown.<BR><BR>The researchers found that NK603 and Roundup both caused similar damage to the rats&#8217; health, whether they were consumed together or on their own.<BR><BR>Premature deaths and sickness were concentrated especially among females.<BR><BR>At the 14-month stage of experiment, no animals in the control groups showed any signs of cancer, but among females in the &#8220;treated&#8221; groups, tumours affected between 10 and 30 percent of the rodents.<BR><BR>&#8220;By the beginning of the 24th month, 50-80 percent of female animals had developed tumours in all treated groups, with up to three tumours per animal, whereas only 30 percent of controls were affected,&#8221; it said<BR><BR>Males which fell sick suffered liver damage, developed kidney and skin tumours and digestive problems.<BR><BR>Breaking with a long tradition in scientific journalism, the authors allowed a selected group of reporters to have access to the paper, provided they signed confidentiality agreements that prevented them from consulting other experts about the research before publication.<BR><BR>Green groups say GM crops could be dangerous to health and the environment, although this claim has so far found no traction in large-scale studies.<BR><BR>In 2009, the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) panel on GM organisms determined that NK603 was &#8220;as safe as conventional maize&#8221;.<BR><BR>&#8220;Maize NK603 and derived products are unlikely to have any adverse effect on human and animal health in the context of the intended uses,&#8221; it said, delivering a judgement based in part on a 90-day feeding study on rats.<BR><BR>NK603 can be imported but cannot be grown in Europe.<BR><BR>Only Monsanto&#8217;s MON810 transgenic corn and a gene-modified potato, Amflora, made by BASF, have authorisation for being grown in Europe.<BR><BR>However, Austria, Bulgaria, France, Greece, Hungary, Luxembourg and Romania have outlawed the growing of MON810 on their territory, citing the principle of precaution.</P><br />

The peer-reviewed study also tested the impacts of consuming residues of Monsanto’s herbicide Roundup, the widest selling herbicide in the world.<BR><BR>&#8220;Health Canada has approved this GM corn and all other GM foods based on corporate tests that were too short to observe the severe health impacts that this study found,&#8221; said Lucy Sharratt of the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network, “Health Canada has never looked past the 90 days of Monsanto’s studies. Canadians have been eating this particular GM corn since 2001.”<BR><BR>The study, published in the scientific journal “Food and Chemical Toxicology,” is the first animal feeding trial conducted over the lifetime of rats (700 days). Health Canada evaluates the safety of GM foods based on industry studies, the longest of which have been 90-day animal feeding trials. The study tested three different diets: GM corn, GM corn with herbicide residue and without.<BR><BR>Monsanto’s GM corn NX603 is herbicide tolerant meaning it is genetically engineered to withstand sprayings of Monsanto’s herbicide Roundup. Health Canada approved it in 2001. French media are reporting that the GM corn samples used in the study were secured from a Canadian university.<BR><BR>The new study observed that rats fed the GM corn, or Roundup, developed tumours faster and died earlier than rats fed non-GM corn. Furthermore, the first tumour was observed after 120 days, with the majority detected after 18 months.<BR><BR>The study shows GM corn can cause severe negative health effects in laboratory rats including mammary tumours and kidney and liver damage, leading to premature death.<BR><BR>· Fed GM corn or Roundup, up to 50% of males and 70% of females died prematurely, compared with only 30% and 20% in the control group.<BR><BR>· Females developed fatal mammary tumours and pituitary disorders. Males suffered liver damage, developed kidney and skin tumours and problems with their digestive system.<BR><BR>· Rats fed GM corn or Roundup developed 2-3 times more tumours.<BR><BR>· By the 24th month, 50% to 80% of the females had developed large tumours compared to 30% in the control group.<BR><BR>“Health Canada must re-evaluate the safety of all GM foods based on these results and halt new approvals until we have long-term testing and transparent regulation. Are Canadians expected to continue eating GM corn?” said Lucy Sharratt, “The federal government needs to redesign the entire system that approves GM foods because our regulations are not designed to look for the types of problems these scientists have found.”<BR><BR>“The safety of GM foods cannot be assumed, it needs to be tested,” said Sharratt, “We cannot rely on science from companies to prove safety. We need to turn to the precautionary principle to keep Canadians safe and this means keeping GM foods off the shelves.”<BR><BR>The government of France is already calling for action in the wake of the study. The relevant ministers in France say that the research confirms that European Union regulations on GM foods are insufficient in regards to the study of toxicological effects.<BR><BR>The study was conducted by a team led by molecular biologist and endocrinologist Professor Gilles-Eric Seralini of the University of Caen in France and was supported by the independent research organization CRIIGEN, the Committee of Research and Independent Information on Genetic Engineering.<BR><BR>-30-<BR><BR>For more information: Lucy Sharratt, Canadian Biotechnology Action Network, Temporary cell: 613 263 9511 for September 20-23 (after September 23, 613 241 2267 ext 25) ; <SPAN style="TEXT-DECORATION: underline"><br />

<P><BR><STRONG>7.New long term research finds GM maize and Roundup increases death and cancer rates in rats</STRONG><BR>GM Freeze, 19 September 2012<BR><BR>A new, independent life-time study has found that a diet of Monsanto’s Roundup Ready maize increases the rates of death and cancer in laboratory rats[1].<BR><BR>The CRIIGEN research team [2] used Monsanto’s NK603 Round Up tolerant maize to feed rats over their whole life time. Feeding trails used to assess the safety of GM crops and herbicides, such as Roundup, do not normally go beyond 90 days in duration. In this study the rats were fed a diet of GM Maize, GM treated with Roundup and the parental variety of non-GM maize with and without access to Roundup treated water supply for up to two years.<BR><BR>The research found that death rates in rats fed GM maize was 70% in females and&nbsp; 50% in&nbsp; males compared to the 20% and 30% in control animals. In females there were 2-3 times as many deaths as the controls.&nbsp; Mammary tumours were the most common cause of death in females, In male rats treated animals showed increase problems with liver and kidneys.<BR><BR>The researchers suggest that the observed effects are due to the hormone disrupting effects of Roundup and the impacts on metabolism of the GM traits which makes the maize tolerant to Roundup. Monsanto&#8217;s GM Roundup Ready maize currently mainly enters the UK as animal feed from North and South America.<BR><BR>Meat, milk and dairy products from GM-fed animals are not labelled.<BR><BR>Commenting Pete Riley of GM Freeze said:<BR>&#8220;These results raise major doubts about the overall safety of GM crops and the herbicide Roundup. The length of the feeding study goes well beyond that required in official risk assessments and are this more like exposure levels of animals and people consuming such crops. Regulators across the world should suspend approvals for GM crops&nbsp; sprayed with&nbsp; Roundup. When this weed killer is applied directly to the growing crop food and feed are far more likely to have higher residues present. <BR><BR>&#8220;We need urgently find out if Roundup residues are coming through into the human diet as a result of GM Roundup Ready maize being fed to livestock, poultry and farmed fish.<BR><BR>&#8220;Monsanto should do the ethical thing and withdraw such GM crops from the market until they are proven to be safe as well as being held fully liable for the health impacts of their products&#8221;.<BR><BR>Calls to: Pete Riley, GM Freeze 07903 341 065<BR><BR>Notes<BR><BR>1. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><FONT color=#454545 size=2>1.<STRONG>The GM lobby wades in on new study</STRONG><BR><BR>Following the publication yesterday of the new GM crop study showing severe health damage in rats, the GM lobby went into rapid rebuttal mode in an effort to limit and influnce media coverage.&nbsp;<BR><BR>The New York Times for instance in its coverage quotes two critics of the study, one of whom is Bruce M Chassy who claims the publication of the peer reviewed paper is &#8220;not an innocent scientific publication&#8221; but a carefully orchestrated media event.<BR></FONT><A style="OUTLINE-WIDTH: 0px; COLOR: #234786; TEXT-DECORATION: underline" href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/20/business/energy-environment/disputed-study-links-modified-corn-to-greater-health-risks.html?_r=0" target=_blank><FONT size=2>http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/20/business/energy-environment/disputed-study-links-modified-corn-to-greater-health-risks.html?_r=0</FONT></A><BR><BR><FONT color=#454545 size=2>Chassy has previously stated that the &#8220;products of biotechnology are probably safer than any others&#8221;, i.e. probably safer than all other food and crops. &#8220;There is no scientific controversy or doubt about the real-world outcomes,&#8221; he claims. &#8220;They are all positive, good for consumers, farmers, the environment.&#8221;<BR><BR>As a GM conspiracy theorist, he has also claimed: &#8220;There is a well financed and organized global opposition to GM crops that spreads misinformation and fear. Make no mistake about it, this isn&#8217;t a grass roots opposition, it is a small handful of people who are paid to block GM crops to benefit certain countries and companies that profit from higher prices for organic and GM-free foods.&#8221;<BR></FONT><A style="OUTLINE-WIDTH: 0px; COLOR: #234786; TEXT-DECORATION: underline" href="/latest-listing/1-news-items/12218" target=_blank><FONT size=2>http://www.gmwatch.org/latest-listing/1-news-items/12218</FONT></A><BR><BR><FONT color=#454545 size=2>The Financial Times in its coverage of the new study also quotes two critics. One of these is Anthony Trewavas, professor of cell biology at Edinburgh University, who dismisses the study&#8217;s findings out of hand as just &#8220;random variation&#8230; in a rodent line likely to develop tumours anyway.&#8221;<BR></FONT><A style="OUTLINE-WIDTH: 0px; COLOR: #234786; TEXT-DECORATION: underline" href="http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/5db0b344-024b-11e2-b41f-00144feabdc0.html" target=_blank><FONT size=2>http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/5db0b344-024b-11e2-b41f-00144feabdc0.html</FONT></A><BR><BR><FONT color=#454545 size=2>Amazing that the peer reviewers missed that.<BR><BR>Trewavas, like many of the &#8220;experts&#8221; who have commented critically on the study, has no especial expertise on animal feeding and safety studies. He is a GM crop scientist and a fervent opponent of organic farming. And like Chassy he has a poor opinion of critics of GM, dismissing them as &#8220;bloody minded, anarchist and frankly merely destructive.&#8221;<BR></FONT><A style="OUTLINE-WIDTH: 0px; COLOR: #234786; TEXT-DECORATION: underline" href="http://www.powerbase.info/index.php/Anthony_Trewavas" target=_blank><FONT size=2>http://www.powerbase.info/index.php/Anthony_Trewavas</FONT></A><BR><BR><FONT color=#454545 size=2>Trewavas has also played a leading role in attacking other studies that have raised questions about GM crops. Particularly notable were his attacks on Arpad Pusztai and Ignacio Chapela, whom he denounced as scientists with political axes to grind.&nbsp;<BR><BR>In the case of Chapela, Trewavas went so far as to demand that he be fired unless he handed over his maize samples for checking:&nbsp;<BR><BR>&#8220;We should be asking Berkeley to request Chapela to release his samples so that they at least can be checked&#8230; Refusal to do so should then be used to request Berkeley to relinquish Chapella&#8217;s [sic] position&#8230;&#8221;&nbsp;<BR><BR>In McCarthyite fashion, Trewavas also demanded:<BR><BR>&#8220;&#8230;it is time to request that journals request information on membership of The Union of Concerned Scientist because Pusztai is or was a member as well and has also called for moratoria&#8221;<BR><BR>&#8220;&#8230;if this case turns out to be correct we should ask whether membership implies that they are free to fiddle any data they like in the &#8216;greater&#8217; cause.&#8221;&nbsp;<BR></FONT><A style="OUTLINE-WIDTH: 0px; COLOR: #234786; TEXT-DECORATION: underline" href="http://bit.ly/S6EGkF" target=_blank><FONT size=2>http://bit.ly/S6EGkF</FONT></A><BR><BR><FONT size=2><FONT color=#454545>As a point of fact, Pusztai never has been a member of the Union of Concerned Scientists, and actively avoided politics following his experience of living under Stalinism in Hungary.<BR><BR>But facts seem to be of little concern to the GM lobby. Indeed, their criticisms of the new study involve amazing hypocrisy considering the very limited nature of the actual GM safety tests the regulatory bodies use to approve GM crops, very few of which have ever achieved peer reviewed publication. There are no complaints from the GM lobby about that. Safety, it seems, is a given, while risks and uncertainties are dismissed out of hand.<BR>&#8212;<BR>&#8212;<BR>2.<STRONG>Anthony Trewavas &#8211; a profile</STRONG><BR></FONT><SPAN style="TEXT-DECORATION: underline"><A href="http://www.powerbase.info/index.php/Anthony_Trewavas">www.powerbase.info/index.php/Anthony_Trewavas</A></SPAN><BR><BR></FONT><FONT color=#454545 size=2>Professor Anthony Trewavas is often the expert of choice whenever a critical perspective on organic food and farming is required by the UK&#8217;s media. From the media&#8217;s perspective Trewavas presents as a prominent scientist who has written extensively on organic farming, including two articles in the prestigious science journal Nature. However, Trewavas is also a scientist with a history of propagandising on behalf of GM foods and against organic farming and there is ample evidence that in the course of that crusade he has put into circulation many statements which are both extreme and unsupported.<BR>Contents<BR><BR>Greenpeace libel<BR><BR>In October 2001 &#8220;Professor Trewavas, Professor of Plant Biochemistry at the University of Edinburgh&#8221; was named in the High Court in London as the source of a letter making libellous allegations against Lord Melchett and Greenpeace in relation to organic farming and GM foods.Greenpeace wins damages over professor&#8217;s &#8216;unfounded&#8217; allegations &#8211; (Education Guardian, Monday October 8, 2001)<BR><BR>A published apology in the Scottish newspaper, the Herald, on the 6th October confirmed that, &#8220;On 3 November 2000 the Herald published a letter it had received from Anthony Trewavas.&#8221; The conclusion of the libel case led to critical comment on the fact that Prof Trewavas was not only a leading Fellow of the Royal Society but is even listed in the Society&#8217;s media directory as an expert available to help journalists get their science stories right. (see: The Ecologist vol 31 no. 10 p.11, &#8221; ISIS News, Institute of Science in Society, Private Eye 1040, p.4)<BR><BR>In response to this adverse publicity, Prof Trewavas, in letters to the Herald and others, has sought to deny responsibility for the libel letter published under his name. However, Trewavas has admitted to encouraging others to circulate the material in question as widely as possible, and to sending the material to, amongst others, a newspaper editor and a PR operative with this intent. More recently it has emerged that the original author of the material that Trewavas circulated was another PR operative involved in a [deceit3.html Monsanto dirty tricks campaign].<BR><BR>Citing right wing propaganda as science<BR><BR>The libel case is, in fact, only the latest controversy centering on Prof Trewavas and his views and activities. Take, for instance, the advice he gave to US scientists on a listserv supporting GM foods in April 2000, where he describes critics of genetic engineering as &#8220;bloody minded, anarchist and frankly merely destructive.&#8221; According to Trewavas, opponents of the technology are interested solely &#8220;in destroying US agribusiness&#8221;. In the same message Trewavas describes the international environmental group Greenpeace as &#8220;controlled by extremists/nihilists and other subversives&#8230; whose only interests [sic] is in destroying business/damaging trade and who have no solution to world population problems except to let people die.&#8221;&nbsp;<BR><BR>He also advises enlisting the help of far right US congressmen like Jesse Helms by alerting them, &#8220;that a subversive organisation directed from europe is attempting to destroy US agriculture and US farming.&#8221; &#8211; advice to US scientists from: &#8220;Tony Trewavas&#8221; <</FONT><A style="OUTLINE-WIDTH: 0px; COLOR: #234786; TEXT-DECORATION: underline" href="mailto: <script language='JavaScript' type='text/javascript'> <!-- var prefix = 'mailto:'; var suffix = ''; var attribs = ''; var path = 'hr' + 'ef' + '='; var addy23313 = 'trewavas' + '@'; addy23313 = addy23313 + 'srv0' + '.' + 'bio' + '.' + 'ed' + '.' + 'ac' + '.' + 'uk'; document.write( '<a ' + path + '\'' + prefix + addy23313 + suffix + '\'' + attribs + '>&#8216; ); document.write( addy23313 ); document.write( &#8216;<\/a>&#8216; ); //&#8211;> </script><script language='JavaScript' type='text/javascript'> <!-- document.write( '<span style=\'display: none;\'>' ); //--> </script>This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. </SPAN></A>><BR><BR>In the same piece Trewavas advises GM supporters to take every opportunity to contact the media to attack the critics and put forward pro-GM views and Prof Trewavas certainly cannot be faulted for failing to take his own advice! As part of his tireless crusade, Trewavas has even had two articles attacking organic farming published in the journal Nature. However, both are simply opinion pieces involving no original research and the arguments he presents and the sources he draws upon are open to very serious question.<BR><BR>The second of the two Nature pieces is taken apart in ORGANICS ENTER THE SCIENCE WARS Angela Ryan.[1]&nbsp; The inadequacy of Trewavas' scholarship is equally apparent in the first, 'Much Food, Many Problems' [Nature 402, 231 (1999)]. Here, for example, he presents his readers with a litany of alarming claims:<BR><BR>*"Going organic worldwide, as Greenpeace wants, would destroy even more wilderness, much of it of marginal agricultural quality15."&nbsp;<BR>*"Mycotoxin contamination [of organics] , and infection from the potentially lethal Escherichia coli O157, are additional problems15."&nbsp;<BR>*"average crop yields [for organics] on a variety of soils are about half those of intensive farming15-17"&nbsp;<BR><BR>The reference given by Trewavas for all three points is, "15. Avery, D. in Fearing Food. Risk, Health and Environment (eds Morris, J. &#038; Bate, R.) 3-18 (Butterworth-Heinemann, Oxford, 1999)". Anyone who actually follows up this reference discovers that it's to a piece by the controversial US journalist and commentator, Dennis Avery - author of the book, 'Saving the planet with pesticides and plastics' - who just happens to (a) work for the biotech-industry-funded Hudson Institute and (b) have no credible scientific credentials. What's more, all Avery's highly partisan claims about organic agriculture in Fearing Food: Risk, Health and Environment lack any specific references to supporting evidence! In other words, Trewavas' trail of evidence for this series of damaging claims leads nowhere but to the assertions of a highly dubious commentator.<BR><BR>Indeed, the article by Avery to which Trewavas repeatedly refers appears in a book edited by two notorious pro-industry propagandists connected to a corporate front funded by Big Tobacco! Nor is this Trewavas' only connection to the book's editors, Morris and Bate, and their pro-corporate propaganda. In early 2000 Trewavas appeared as a witness against organic farming in the Counterblast TV programme put together and presented by Roger Bate in his role as Director of the tobacco-industry funded European Science and Environment Forum.<BR><BR>Needless to say, Prof Trewavas is not entirely disinterested in his simultaneous promotion of GM crops and crusade against organic farming. Trewavas is himself a GM crop researcher. He also serves on the Governing Council of the John Innes Centre, a plant biotech institute which has itself been mired in controversy over its pro-GM propagandising.<BR><BR>So while Trewavas issues lurid warnings about organic farms acting as "repositories of disease", in reality it is Prof Trewavas himself who is in real need of a health warning!<BR><BR>Roles - not all current<BR><BR>Professor of Plant Biochemistry at the University of Edinburgh<BR>Scientific Alliance advisory board [SA are climate change sceptics]<BR>on Governing Council of John Innes Centre<BR>Fellow of Royal Society<BR>Fellow of Royal Society of Edinburgh<BR>Witness on Scottish Parliament Health and Community Care Committee<BR>Member of UK govt Advisory Committee on Genetic Modification&nbsp;</FONT><BR></p>

<P id=sp0010>The health effects of a Roundup-tolerant genetically modified maize (from 11% in the diet), cultivated with or without Roundup, and Roundup alone (from 0.1&nbsp;ppb in water), were studied 2&nbsp;years in rats. In females, all treated groups died 2–3 times more than controls, and more rapidly. This difference was visible in 3 male groups fed GMOs. All results were hormone and sex dependent, and the pathological profiles were comparable. Females developed large mammary tumors almost always more often than and before controls, the pituitary was the second most disabled organ; the sex hormonal balance was modified by GMO and Roundup treatments. In treated males, liver congestions and necrosis were 2.5–5.5 times higher. This pathology was confirmed by optic and transmission electron microscopy. Marked and severe kidney nephropathies were also generally 1.3–2.3 greater. Males presented 4 times more large palpable tumors than controls which occurred up to 600&nbsp;days earlier. Biochemistry data confirmed very significant kidney chronic deficiencies; for all treatments and both sexes, 76% of the altered parameters were kidney related. These results can be explained by the non linear endocrine-disrupting effects of Roundup, but also by the overexpression of the transgene in the GMO and its metabolic consequences.</P></DIV><br />

I am shocked by the extreme negative health impacts,&#8221; said Dr Michael Antoniou, molecular biologist at King&#8217;s College London, and a member of CRIIGEN, the independent scientific council which supported the research.<BR><BR>GM crops have been approved for human consumption on the basis of 90-day animal feeding trials. But three months is the equivalent of late adolescence in rats, who can live for almost two years (700 days), and there have long been calls to study the effects over the course of a lifetime.<BR><BR>The peer-reviewed study, conducted by a team of researchers at the University of Caen, found that rats fed on a diet containing NK603 Roundup resistant GM maize, or given water containing Roundup at levels permitted in drinking water, over a two-year period, died significantly earlier than rats fed on a standard diet.<BR><BR>Up to half the male rats and 70% of females died prematurely, compared with only 30% and 20% in the control group. Across both sexes the researchers found that rats fed Roundup in their water or NK603 developed two to three times more large tumours than the control group. By the beginning of the 24th month, 50-80% of females in all treated groups had developed large tumours, with up to three per animal. By contrast, only 30% of the control group were affected. Scientists reported the tumours &#8220;were deleterious to health due to [their] very large size,&#8221; making it difficult for the rats to breathe, [and] causing problems with their digestion which resulted in haemorrhaging.<BR><BR>The paper, published in the scientific journal Food and Chemical Toxicology today, concluded that NK603 and Roundup caused similar damage to the rats’ health, whether they were consumed together or on their own. The team also found that even the lowest doses of Roundup, which fall well within authorised limits in drinking tap water, were associated with severe health problems.<BR><BR>“The rat has long been used as a surrogate for human toxicity. All new pharmaceutical, agricultural and household substances are, prior to their approval, tested on rats. This is as good an indicator as we can expect that the consumption of GM maize and the herbicide Roundup, impacts seriously on human health,” Antoniou added.<BR><BR>Roundup is widely available in the UK, and is recommended on Gardeners Question Time. But this also represents a potential blow for the growth of GM Foods.<BR><BR>With the global population expected to increase to nine billion by 2050, the UN has said that global food production must increase by 50%. And a consultation led by DEFRA entitled Green Food Project recommended as recently as 10 July 2012 that GM must be reassessed as a possible solution.<BR><BR>Some 85% of maize grown in the US is GM, while 70% of processed foods contain GM ingredients without GM labelling. In the UK and Europe GM maize is not consumed directly by humans but is widely used in animal feed without the requirement for GM labelling.<BR><BR>Antoniou said there could be no doubting the credibility of this peer-reviewed study. “This is the most thorough research ever published into the health effects of GM food crops and the herbicide Roundup on rats.”<BR><BR>Led by Professor Gilles-Eric Seralini, the researchers studied 10 groups, each containing 10 male and 10 female rats, over their normal lifetime. Three groups were given Roundup – developed by Monstanto – in their drinking water at three different levels consistent with exposure through the food chain from crops sprayed with the herbicide. Three groups were fed diets containing different proportions of Roundup resistant maize at 11%, 22% and 33%. Three groups were given both Roundup and the GM maize at the same three dosages. The control group was fed an equivalent diet with no Roundup or NK603 containing 33% of non-GM maize.<BR><BR>======================<BR><br />

They suffered mammary tumours and severe liver and kidney damage.<BR><BR>The paper, &#8220;Long term toxicity of a Roundup herbicide and a Roundup-tolerant genetically modified maize&#8221; reports on a study conducted by a team of scientists led by molecular biologist and endocrinologist Professor Gilles-Eric Seralini, co-director of the Risk Quality and Sustainable Environment Unit at the University of Caen, France, who is an authority on studies into the health impact of GMO&#8217;s and pesticides. It was supported by independent research organisation, CRIIGEN.<BR><BR>Dr Michael Antoniou, molecular biologist at Kings College, London, and a member of the CRIIGEN scientific council, says:<BR><BR>&#8220;This is the most thorough research ever published into the health effects of GM food crops and the herbicide Roundup on rats. It shows an extraordinary number of tumours developing earlier and more aggressively &#8211; particularly in female animals. I am shocked by the extreme negative health impacts.&#8221;<BR><BR>&#8220;The rat has long been used as a surrogate for human toxicity. All new pharmaceutical, agricultural and household substances are, prior to their approval, tested on rats. This is as good an indicator as we can expect that the consumption of GM maize and the herbicide Roundup, impacts seriously on human health.&#8221;<BR><BR>In the peer reviewed paper, the research team say they believe this is the first long-term animal feeding trial to examine the effects of Roundup, the world&#8217;s most used herbicide, and a commercial Roundup tolerant GM maize. Researchers studied 10 groups, each containing 10 male and 10 female rats, over their normal lifetime &#8211; two years.<BR><BR>Three groups were given Roundup in their drinking water, at three different levels consistent with exposure through the food chain from crops sprayed with the weedkiller: the mid level corresponded to the maximum level permitted in the US in some GM feed; the lowest corresponded to contamination found in some tap waters. Three groups were fed diets which contained different proportions of NK603 – 11%, 22% and 33%. Three groups were given both Roundup and NK603 at the same three dosages. The final control group was fed an equivalent diet with no Roundup or NK603 but containing 33% of equivalent non-GM maize.<BR><BR>Researchers found that NK603 and Roundup both caused similar damage to the rats&#8217; health whether they were consumed on their own or together. Females developed fatal mammary tumours and pituitary disorders. Males suffered liver damage, developed kidney and skin tumours and experienced problems with their digestive system. The team also identified a &#8220;threshold effect&#8221; where even the lowest doses were associated with severe health problems.<BR><BR>The report states: &#8220;Similar degrees of pathological symptoms were noticed in this study to occur from the lowest to the highest doses suggesting a threshold effect. This corresponds to levels likely to arise from consumption or environmental exposure, such as either 11% GM maize in food, or 50ng/L of glyphosate in R-formulation [the lowest concentration of Roundup in the rats' drinking water] as can be found in some contaminated drinking tap waters, and which falls within authorized limits.&#8221;<BR><BR>*Up to 50% of males and 70% of females died prematurely (before deaths could be put down to normal aging) compared with only 30% and 20% in the control group.<BR><BR>*Across all treatments and both sexes, researchers found treated rats developed 2-3 times more large tumours than the control group, defined as 17.5mm in females and 20mm in males.<BR><BR>*By the beginning of the 24th month 50%-80% of females in all treated groups had developed large tumours, with up to three per animal. Only 30% of the controls were affected.<BR><BR>*The tumours &#8220;were deleterious to health due to a very large size&#8221;, making it difficult for the rats to breathe, causing problems with their digestion and resulting in haemorrhaging.<BR><BR>*The first large detectable tumours appeared after four and seven months in males and females respectively but only after 14 months in the female control group and 23 months in a control male. However, the majority of tumours were only detectable after 18 months.<BR><BR>Treated males suffered severe liver and kidney dysfunction. Liver congestions and necrosis were 2.5 to 5.5 times higher than in the control group. There were also 1.3 – 2.3 times more instances of &#8220;marked and severe&#8221; kidney disease.<BR><BR>The lowest dose tested in the study (50 nanograms per litre) is below safety limits for glyphosate in water and crops. EU legislation sets the maximum permitted concentration (MPC) in water at 0.1 microgram/litre, 1 mg/kg in maize, and 20 mg/kg in other animal feeds like soy, oats and barley. The US sets a Maximum Residual Level (MRL) in some animal feed of 400mg/kg.<BR><BR>The research findings raise serious questions about the current regulatory process for licensing industrial chemicals, pesticides and other novel crops. The scientists observe that GM crops have been approved safe for consumption on the basis of 90-day animal feeding trials. They also point out that only Roundup&#8217;s active principle, glyphosate, has been tested rather than the commercial product, which includes ingredients that enable the glyphosate to penetrate plants more efficiently.<BR><BR>The research also highlights the urgent need for more research into the long-term effects of all GM food crops, which are currently grown on 1.8% of the world&#8217;s agricultural land. In the US, 70% of processed foods contain GM ingredients without GM labeling, and 85% of maize now grown in the U.S. is GM. In the UK and Europe, GM maize is not consumed directly by humans but it is widely included in animal feed. Hundreds of thousands of tons of GM maize are imported to the UK each year for use in the diets of chickens, pigs and dairy cows. Meat and dairy products from animals fed on GM are currently sold in British supermarkets without any requirement for GM labeling.<BR><BR>Patrick Holden, Founder and Director for the Sustainable Food Trust, says:<BR>&#8220;This research raises a number of serious issues and it is now essential that regulators examine the findings carefully and that other researchers replicate this study on a larger scale to see if the same results are obtained. &#8220;Looking critically at all aspects of food production, be they intensive, low input, organic or GM crops, has become a priority given that we can no longer be sure that global food supplies will be capable of feeding the growing global population. GM crops hold out the promise of helping to meet the triple challenges of climate change, resource depletion and population increase, but if they have negative effects on health we need to recognise this as quickly as possible and apply our energies in other areas. &#8220;On the basis of this study, we have to conclude that there is now a serious question mark over the safety of at least one GM crop. This suggests that all currently licensed GM crops should be re-evaluated and that in future safety studies in laboratory&nbsp;animals must be conducted over significantly longer periods of time that are equivalent to the animals&#8217; normal life span not simply their adolescence.&#8221;<BR><BR>The researchers hypothesize that the reason why NK603 GM maize, NK603 sprayed with Roundup, and Roundup on its own, all produced very similar negative health outcomes, is that both the GM maize and the weedkiller Roundup &#8220;may cause hormonal disturbances in the same biochemical and physiological pathway.&#8221;<BR><BR>Glyphosate, the active ingredient in the herbicide Roundup is a known endocrine disruptor, and previous research has shown that it can cause liver and kidney failure if consumed above maximum permitted residue levels. However, this is the first research that suggests that even very low levels, such as those found in drinking water, are harmful when consumed over an extended period.<BR><BR>The paper says: &#8220;The results of the study presented here clearly demonstrate that lower levels of complete agricultural glyphosate herbicide formulations, at concentrations well below officially set safety limits, induce severe hormone-dependent mammary, hepatic [liver] and kidney disturbances.&#8221;<BR><BR>It suggests that overexpression of the GM &#8220;transgene&#8221; EPSPS, which makes NK603 tolerant to Roundup in the field, may disrupt biosynthetic pathways and cause similar problems. Most edible GM crops use EPSPS to make them tolerant to Roundup.<BR><BR>Prof Seralini&#8217;s co-authors are Emilie Clair, Robin Mesnage, Steeve Gress, Nicolas Defarge, Manuela Malatesta, Didier Hennequin, and Joel Spiroux de Vendomois.<BR></SPAN></P><br />

<P><SPAN class=date id=pubDate>출처 : Bloomberg May 27, 2010, 4:28 PM EDT<BR></SPAN><A href="http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-05-27/monsanto-cuts-profit-forecast-on-herbicide-oversupply-update4-.html">http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-05-27/monsanto-cuts-profit-forecast-on-herbicide-oversupply-update4-.html</A><BR><BR>By Jack Kaskey</P><br />
<P class=indent>May 27 (Bloomberg) &#8212; Monsanto Co., the world’s largest seed company, cut its profit forecast after deciding to reduce the price of its Roundup herbicide because Chinese competitors oversupplied the market. The shares fell the most in seven months.</P><br />
<P class=indent>Profit in the fiscal year through August will be $2.40 to $2.60 a share, excluding some items, compared with a previous forecast of $3.10 to $3.30, St. Louis-based Monsanto said today in a statement. Profit on that basis was estimated to be $3.09 a share, the average of 18 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.</P><br />
<P class=indent>Chief Executive Officer Hugh Grant has trimmed the outlook for Roundup in the past year as Chinese producers flood markets with generic Roundup. The herbicide, also known as glyphosate, kills weeds while sparing crops containing a genetic modification. Grant said today he’ll price Roundup closer to generics and simplify product offerings.</P><br />
<P class=indent>Monsanto lowering its outlook “reflects an even sharper deterioration in the glyphosate business than we had expected,” Laurence Alexander, a New York-based analyst at Jefferies &#038; Co., said in a note to clients.</P><br />
<P class=indent>Monsanto fell $2.39, or 4.5 percent, to $50.27 at 4 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading, the biggest decline in the Standard &#038; Poor’s 500 Index and the largest drop since Oct. 26. Monsanto declined 39 percent this year.</P><br />
<P class=center>Gross Profit</P><br />
<P class=indent>Gross profit from Roundup, the world’s most popular herbicide, will drop to $50 million to $200 million this fiscal year because of lower demand, falling prices and costs to streamline the Roundup portfolio, Chief Financial Officer Carl Casale said on a conference call with analysts. Profit from the business in subsequent years will be a “steady state” of $250 million to $300 million, or about $1 a gallon, he said.</P><br />
<P class=indent>“We are going to radically simplify what we offer,” Grant said on the call.</P><br />
<P class=indent>Roundup gross profit more than doubled in 2008 to $1.98 billion and was $1.84 billion last year, prompting producers in China to boost output. Global production capacity is now double what farmers need, Grant said on the conference call.</P><br />
<P class=indent>Multinational competitors are using the generic product as a “loss leader” to sell other chemicals, keeping glyphosate margins at record lows, he said. The U.S. may need to pursue anti-dumping measures against China, Grant said.</P><br />
<P class=center>‘Ample Supply’</P><br />
<P class=indent>“The generic product is in ample supply and the performance is just as good, so Monsanto had to recognize that,” Mark Gulley, a New York-based analyst at Soleil Securities, said in a telephone interview. “This is particularly acute given lower crop prices.”</P><br />
<P class=indent>Corn futures in Chicago have fallen 12 percent in a year and soybeans have dropped 20 percent.</P><br />
<P class=indent>The business that makes seeds and modified crop genetics, which accounted for two-thirds of Monsanto’s $6.76 billion of gross profit last fiscal year, will drive company earnings growth of about 15 percent a year starting in fiscal 2011, Grant said.</P><br />
<P class=indent>“With Roundup officially graduating to the background of our earnings profile today, it is seeds and traits that officially carry the weight for our mid-teens earnings growth,” Grant said.</P><br />
<P class=indent>Grant is cutting seed prices to accelerate adoption of new products, such as Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybeans and SmartStax corn, which fell short of planting targets. He said last month Monsanto is unlikely to meet his 2007 goal of doubling company gross profit by 2012.</P><br />
<P class=center>Reduced Forecasts</P><br />
<P class=indent>Monsanto had forecast 2010 profit from the Roundup business would be $1.9 billion until June 2009, when the glut of Chinese generics prompted the first in a series of reductions to the herbicide outlook. The forecast was reduced to $600 million on April 7.</P><br />
<P class=indent>Monsanto will no longer have multiple price tiers for Roundup, enabling cuts in the support infrastructure, Casale said. Roundup will be packaged with other herbicides to help combat weeds that are beginning to survive the chemical in cotton and soybean fields, Grant said.</P><br />
<P class=indent>“Weed resistance is real, but managing it doesn’t have to be complex,” Grant said.</P><br />
<P class=indent>Profit in the current quarter will be 75 cents to 80 cents a share, excluding some items, Monsanto said today. Analysts projected profit of $1.33, the average of 16 estimates in the Bloomberg survey.</P><br />
<P class=indent>Monsanto halved its fiscal-2010 forecast for free cash flow to $400 million to $500 million, from an April projection of $900 million to $1 billion.</P><br />
