[돼지독감/기업감시] 로슈, 상반기 타미플루 판매액 9억 3800만$

지난 6개월 간의 돼지독감 유행으로 스위스에 기반을 둔 다국적 거대 제약기업 로슈의 타미플루 판매가 203퍼센트 상승했다고 합니다. 타미플루의 엄청난 판매에 힘입어 로슈그룹 전체 판매액은 9.0% 성장했습니다.

로슈측의 발표에 따르면, 올해 상반기 타미플루 판매액은 9억 3800만 달러(6억 5900만 유로)에 이르렀으며, 정부와 기업에 비축용으로 판매한 타미플루 판매액이 6억 1250만 달러(4억 3000만 유로)에 달한다고 합니다.

WHO가 공식 피해 집계를 포기할 정도로 돼지독감이 더욱 확산되고 있으므로 하반기에는 수요가 더욱 늘어날 것이므로 판매액도 더욱 가파르게 상승할 것으로 예상됩니다.

이에 따라 로슈는 2010년까지 년간 4억팩(현재 생산량의 4배 수준)을 생산함으로써 생산능력을 급속하게 향상시킬 것이라고 밝히고 있습니다.(스미스클라인은 리렌자를 년간 1억 9천만팩까지 생산하기 위한 시설증설을 발표했습니다.)

그런데 실제 돼지독감 환자가 90~95%는 타미플루나 리렌자를 투여하지 않아도 자연 회복되며, 일부 환자의 샘플에서 타미플루 내성이 확인된 상황이라는 점을 고려한다면… 로슈가 이렇게 막대한 경제적 이익을 올리는 것이 바람직한 것인지에 대한 의문이 제기될 수 있다고 생각합니다.

현재 돼지독감 발생의 진원지에 대한 음모론을 비롯한 다양한 설들이 난무하고 있는 것도 이러한 상황을 반영하고 있는 것이라 생각합니다.

ZURICH (AFP) – Sales of anti-flu drug Tamiflu soared 203 percent in the first six months of 2009, Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche said Thursday, contributing to a 9.0 percent growth in overall sales for the group.

Amid the swine flu pandemic, sales of the drug reached 1.0 billion Swiss francs (938 million dollars or 659 million euros) in the first half of the year.

Sales to governments and corporations which were stockpiling the drug reached 653 million francs during the period, said Roche.

“Additional government stockpiling orders and increased demand in the retail pharmacy market contributed to the particularly strong sales recorded in the second quarter,” it added.

Roche said it would be ramping up its production capacity of Tamiflu — one of two drugs recommended by the World Health Organisation to treat the A(H1N1) virus — to 400 million packs annually by 2010.

In its first half earnings statement, the group also said that overall sales reached 24 billion Swiss francs, up 9 percent.

Net profit was however down 29 percent to 4.1 billion Swiss francs due to charges related to the acquisition of Genentech.
