에콰도르 라파엘 코레아(Rafael Correa) 대통령의 수석 안보보좌관(chief of security)인 존 메리노(John Merino) 공군 중령(Air force Lt. Col.)이 돼지독감으로 사망했다는 소식입니다.

존 메리노 중령은 28일 동안 병원에 입원하여 치료를 받았으나 지난 일요일(9월 6일,현지시간)에 사망했다고 합니다.

지난 주까지 에콰도르에서 돼지독감에 감염된 환자는 1,382 명이 확정진단을 받았으며, 36명이 사망하였다고 보고되었습니다.

WHO의 발표에 따르면, 2009년 4월 이후 현재까지 돼지독감으로 사망한 사람은 전세계적으로 최소 2,837명에 달한다고 합니다.

Deadly swine flu virus has killed Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa’s chief of security, Air force Lt. Col. John Merino, according to the country’s government.

Lt. Col. Merino died on Sunday after being hospitalized for 28 days, said the online government publication El Ciudadano.

Francisco Torres, the doctor for the office of the Presidency, informed the Ecuadorian publication, El Ciudadano, AP reported.

President Correa expressed his condolences to Merino’s family at the military hospital where the security chief died, the publication said.

As of last week, the Latin American country has reported 36 confirmed deaths from swine flu along with 1,382 tested positive.

The virus has claimed the lives of at least 2,837 people worldwide since it first emerged in April 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) says.
