SUMMARY

This study aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) on 50 Dutch broiler farms. Of 145 persons living and/or working on these farms, eight tested positive for MRSA (5·5%). Investigation of 250 pooled throat samples of broilers and 755 dust samples resulted in four farms where MRSA-positive samples were present (8·0%). All isolates belonged to the CC398 complex. Living and/or working on a MRSA-positive farm was a risk for MRSA carriage; 66·7% of people on positive farms were MRSA positive vs. 1·5% on negative farms (P<0·0001). Due to the low number of positive farms and persons, and high similarity in farm management, it was impossible to draw statistically valid conclusions on other risk factors. For broiler farming, both farm and human MRSA prevalence seem much lower than for pig or veal farming. However, MRSA carriage in people living and/or working on broiler farms is higher compared to the general human population in The Netherlands (5·5% vs. <0·1%). As broiler husbandry systems are not unique to The Netherlands, this might imply that people in contact with live broilers are at risk for MRSA carriage worldwide.

The Netherlands backs Poland in its call for the European Union to allow animal products to be used again in animal feed, as long as the risk of mad cow disease has been eradicated, the Volkskrant reports on Monday.

Animal protein has been banned from animal feed since the 1990s following the BSE scandal.

Poland, which takes over the revolving EU chairmanship in the second half of this year, wants to use pig and chicken waste in feed because it is much cheaper than soya.

The paper says the Netherlands backs the proposal on condition chicken meal is not fed to chickens or pig meal to pigs. It also opposes the use of protein from ruminants, such as cows and goats.

Last year there were three cases of mad cow disease in the Netherlands.

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) – A 10-year-old cow in the Netherlands has tested positive for BSE, more commonly known as “mad cow” disease, the first such result in more than two years, the Dutch government said on Friday.

The government ministry responsible for food quality said the animal tested positive for the brain-wasting disease bovine spongiform encephalopathy at a slaughterhouse.

(REUTERS/Lee Jae-Won)

It was the first positive test for BSE in the country since May 2008, the ministry said in a statement.

A spokesman for the ministry told Reuters the cow’s meat was withdrawn from the food chain after a first positive test, while a second test confirmed the result.

All cows sent to slaughter in the country are tested and held aside for the results before their meat enters the system.

Mad cow disease is of particular concern because it has been known to cause a related brain-wasting disease in humans who have eaten contaminated meat.

Three people have died in the Netherlands from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease after eating meat from a BSE positive cow. The last reported death was in January 2009.
